Fine Antique English Gilded Bronze Mounted Coromandel Lap Desk
About the Item
A superb quality Victorian writing box / slope in exotic and dramatic Coromandel wood mounted with the most exquisite gilded bronze mounts, all intricately engraved with top-notch screwed mounting.
The box comes complete with the original working Bramah key, always a sign of quality. The bottom section unfolds to reveal the leather covered writing surface with gold embossed tooling. The top opens to reveal a fitted interior with lidded compartments, a sloped compartment for pen nibs, an inkwell compartment complete with brass topped inkwell, a removable pen tray and a sloped stamp compartment.
Dating to the mid nineteenth century, around 1850, this gem is in superb condition (minor wear commensurate with age and use) and a rare find. While closed, the box measures 14" x 10" x 4 1/2" tall at rear.
