English Papier-mâché Spectacle Case with Mother-of-pearl Inlay, circa 1900

About the Item

This late 19th century spectacle case has an elegant design of lacquered papier-mâché with mother-of-pearl inlay. The inlaid decoration depicts a spray of various flowers and is bordered by a scalloped wire trim. Each shell is unique in color and texture with a glimmering, iridescent finish. The case features a hinged opening on one side with a purple velvet inner lining. Slender and petite in size, this antique case can be used for small eyeglasses or for stowing small items like jewelry, pens or trinkets. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
