English Papier-mâché Spectacle Case with Mother-of-pearl Inlay, circa 1900
About the Item
This late 19th century spectacle case has an elegant design of lacquered papier-mâché with mother-of-pearl inlay. The inlaid decoration depicts a spray of various flowers and is bordered by a scalloped wire trim. Each shell is unique in color and texture with a glimmering, iridescent finish. The case features a hinged opening on one side with a purple velvet inner lining. Slender and petite in size, this antique case can be used for small eyeglasses or for stowing small items like jewelry, pens or trinkets.
