The lower compartment also houses the reading rail which is located at the rear of the compartment and pulls off from the wall lugs. The reading rail then fits on the exterior of the writing slope and the reading height can be adjusted by the brass bracket located on the interior wall of the writing slope and locates on the opposite face. The face of the interior has strengthening metalwork with shaped brass inlay to the corners. The rear of the box houses two ink wells, a pen tray and two storage compartments, below the pen tray there are a pair of candlesticks which locate in two small holes at the top of the slope for use in lower lit areas or at night when writing or reading. To the right hand side of the box a small brass pin is located which locks the side drawer when the box is closed, when the pin is removed the side drawer can then be pulled out for storage. There are three secret compartments located in the writing slope. The first is located in the top half of the writing slope beneath the baize to the left hand side the partition lifts out and a false floor can be lifted to access the first secret storage location. The second is located within the first secret compartment and can be accessed by pushing the inner right wall which opens a spring loaded false wall revealing two drawers. The third and final secret compartment is located beneath the pen tray and candle stick tray. When the candle stick tray is removed the left hand partition can be lifted up which actions a spring loaded small drawer for the most private possessions. The Writing Box dates to the late 18th century Georgian era during the reign of George III circa 1790. The Writing Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.
