Japanese Vintage Incense Utensils for Tea Ceremony Kougou Oribe ware 1950s

About the Item

This is a porcelain box which we use during tea ceremony. It is called Kougou. This was made in Japan around 1950s in Showa era. This was made with style 'Oribe'. This item will come with a wooden box. Oribe ware is a style of Japanese pottery that first appeared in the sixteenth century. It is a type of Japanese stoneware recognized by its freely-applied glaze as well as its dramatic visual departure from the more somber, monochrome shapes and vessels common in Raku ware of the time. The ceramics were often asymmetric, with eccentric shapes; deformed shapes were not uncommon. These shapes were achieved through moulding rather than turning on a potter's wheel. Some bowls were so deformed that they were difficult to use – even whisking tea could become difficult.(Wikipedia) Kougou: Incense containers. Also called koubako. Small, lidded containers usually made of lacquer or ceramic, and sometimes wood, shell or metal, for storing the aromatic wood burned as incense. Kougou are considered tea utensils because the incense chips koboku and pastille nerikou are fed into the charcoal ashes used to heat the kettle. Kougou were also displayed on kobukusa (small cloth wrappers) or kamikamashiki (paper kettle-rest) in waiting rooms or tearooms. (JAANUS)
