Louis XV Multicolored Gold Étui

About the Item

This incredible Louis XV-era étui is a work of skillful artistry. Crafted entirely of rose, green white and yellow gold, this stunning vessel bears an exceptionally intricate, classically inspired motif punctuated by blooms and garlands. Resplendent in its artistry and beauty, this étui flawlessly reflects the 18th-century taste for classical refinement and delicate, intricate ornamentation. Named from the Old French word “estuier,” meaning “to keep or hold,” an étui is a very versatile item. These ornamental cases could be made of any material, from precious metals like gold or silver to exotic materials such as tortoiseshell or shagreen. Though many were used for more clandestine reasons, some also served the more practical purpose of holding small items such as scissors, thimbles, bodkins and needles, makeup pencils and even a doctor’s lancet. Maker's mark of Charles-Etienne Lemaire, Paris, 1762-1763; charge mark of Jean-Jacques Prevost, 1762-1768; French post-1838 restricted warranty gold mark. 4 1/2” length x 3/4" wide x 5/8" deep
