Large Pop Art Lacquered box handmade in the 1980s by Hollis Fingold at Radar Design in Denver, Colorado. Airbrushed paint on wood. Signed. This larger Hollis Fingold box is a tribute to both American midcentury modern design and the vibrant world of Pop Art. Fingold incorporates the iconic splatter pattern of 1950s fiberglass lamp shades. But the box also pays homage to the realm of comic books in Pop Art, a theme famously explored by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. With its vibrant colors and bold hatching lines, the box embraces the pop art tradition. The colors have a vibrancy and a certain plasticity often associated with comic books. Radiant orange, hot pink, and brilliant blue hues are interwoven with a subtle black graphite-like texture or the characteristic 1950s splatter pattern. Beneath the box, the underside has a neon blue hue and thin black splatters. When you open the lid, you see a contrasting blue against an orange backdrop. Finally, the interior padding fabric is hand-painted in a hot pink shade with more thin black splatters. Shaped like alien pets, Hollis Fingold's boxes appear to hover on their four pointy legs, with lid handles resembling punk hairdos. They are sensuous yet dangerous creatures that one must adore to tame and open. ABOUT HOLLIS FINGOLD: Born in 1944, Fingold's creative journey led her to Denver, Colorado, where she established her studio, Radar Design, in 1986. Her telephones, boxes, and furniture have graced television shows, movies, commercials, and celebrities' interiors, finding their way into department stores, art galleries, and museum stores worldwide, from China to Hollywood (including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Bloomingdale's, and Disney World).
