Tunbridge Ware Stationery Box with Isometric Cubes and Floral Mosaic, c1870 Additional Information: Heading: Tunbridge Ware - Wedge-Shaped Stationery Box with Isometric Cubes and Floral Mosaic c1870 Date : c1870 Period : Victorian Origin : Tunbridge Wells - Thomas Barton Decoration : To the top of the lid - isometric cubes within an eight-square geometric border; a broad, floral frieze around all four sides of the body; internally - divided in to six compartments, one of which has a 'false base' to accommodate less deep items, all lined with distinctive embossed purple paper; the original red lining paper to the base has been rather inexpertly covered with green baize; working lock and key Size : 22.3 W x 13.4 D x 10.5 H cm Condition : Excellent; all tesserae present and correct; some very slight warping with the grain to the isomeric cube tiles with one or two being a little corrugated; superficial bumps and bruises; wear to the lining paper where it folds over the edges of the compartment dividers Restoration : None, other than the baize affixed to the base as above Notes : Made by Thomas Barton in the period after the death of his former boss, Edmund Nye, in1863. This can be discerned by a number of factors including the nature of the geometric banding, the use of green oak tesserae in the flora frieze and the very distinctive lining paper - an excellent example of his work
