A lovely vintage Russian style lidded, hand painted, black lacquered small wooden box with a red interior. The box features a miniature fairy tale scene, the top of the box portrays a vignette of a shore scene where several men in a small boat pay a visit to several women on the shore This beautiful lacquer box is hand crafted and hand painted and it is signed by artist. The entire box is painted in a base coat of glossy black, and the inside is painted in a deep red tone. Some of the lacquer across the top of the box shows some age. The hinges of the box are very sturdy and the box opens and closes as intended. The dimensions are 6.5" W x 4" D x 1.5" H. The history of lacquerwar Authentic lacquer miniature paintings are one of the rarest and unique artworks in the world. And despite the complexity of the process, the miniature artists still paint them in the old-fashioned way. The peculiar and subtle art of Kholui lacquer miniatures incorporates the principles of Old Russian painting and folk art as a basis. Natural materials are used to manufacture paints: minerals, pigment (for example, red clays, cadmium, Siena, volkonskoite, etc.), mixed with water, vinegar, and egg yolk. The brushes used for painting are made of squirrel fur. Palekh miniature artists resort to complex multi-figured compositions, where the proportions are elongated, and the style is reminiscent of iconography. The development of Russian lacquerware from the four small rural villages of Fedoskino, Palekh, Kholui, and Mstera, is a story of artists adapting local traditions to produce new enterprises. The papier-mâché treasures, decorated with miniature paintings of folk scenes and fairy tales, are lacquered and polished to a high sheen. The boxes became popular when the religious icons were outlawed. Garrity-Arquitt said the artisans adapted their skills to continue to make a living. After the fall of the Soviet Union, she said, the market was flooded with these small art pieces, so the artists switched back to making icons. "They used the same paint, the same style and the same technique," Garrity-Arquitt said. Each piece is hand painted, not mass produced. While often bought by tourists, they also represent genuine art pieces, Garrity-Arquitt added. The boxes are made of papier-mâché, which took four or five months to complete. The forms had to be created, then the boxes fashioned and dried. Then the boxes received layer upon layers of paint to be dried. This art form first appeared in Russia in the 18th century, when Peter the Great commissioned lacquered panels, painted by Russian iconographers, to decorate a room at his Monplaisir Palace. As with other decorative arts introduced during Peter's reign, the manufacture of lacquerware was gradually taken over by private companies and later, in the Soviet period, by cooperative artels.
