Vintage Portmeirion Lidded Tobacco Jar Comroy's of London Susan Williams Ellis

About the Item

A vintage, 1970s era, lidded tobacco jar designed by Susan Williams-Ellis for Portmeirion and retailed through Comoy's of London. The lid is printed with a port scene. The body is wrapped in a textured leather. A little history of Portmeirion from their website, "Portmeirion Group is a British company selling ceramic tableware, giftware, glassware and home fragrance products worldwide. Our six unique and established homeware and fragrance brands have over 750 years of collective life: Portmeirion, Spode, Wax Lyrical, Royal Worcester, Pimpernel and Nambé." And also from the Portmeirion website, a brief biography on designer Susan Williams-Ellis, "Susan Williams-Ellis, the elder daughter of Clough Williams-Ellis, was the founder of Portmeirion Pottery. Susan and her husband Euan Cooper-Willis began Portmeirion Pottery in 1960. Susan's designs were at the forefront of contemporary style, and her 1972 design, Botanic Garden, became a worldwide best selling range of tableware. This range is still available for purchase from Portmeirion Online. The success of Portmeirion Potteries was only one facet of Susan's life and work. Susan was an accomplished artist and author, drawing inspiration from the sea as did her father. Susan studied at Chelsea School of Art under Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland. Her paintings have been exhibited at the Festival of Britain and her many of the rooms at Portmeirion Village were furnished with her textile designs. The pottery is now sold worldwide but its spiritual home is still here at Portmeirion." And to learn more about Comoy's of London, I turned to the Pipe Shop website, "Francois Comoy and his brothers hailed from a small monastic town in eastern France called Saint-Claude. Originally working with box wood and beach, one son Louis found out about briar and it’s potential for being the best pipe making Material. This was the beginning of their journey to become one of the most prominent pipe makers of their day in Europe. In 1879 Francois’ son Henri moved to London with a small bag of tools. Setting up in today’s Cambridge Circus he was the pinnacle in the perpetuation of Briar Pipes and is credited with coining the appellation “London Made”. There is a lot more to the fascinating history of the Comoy brand, but for now I'll leave it at that.
