Large Sterling Silver Jewellery Casket

About the Item

This magnificent antique jewellery casket in sterling silver has a rectangular form onto four bracket style feet. The anterior surface of this antique Edward VIII jewelry casket is embellished with a semi-circular vacant cartouche flanked with two hallmarked, cast and applied fleur-de-lis designs. The upper portion of the body is embellished with a band of conjoined palmette designs incorporating floral rosettes to the terminals, all above an applied bead decorated border. Either end of this large casket is ornamented with an exceptional, cast and applied handle, each fashioned in the form of lion's masks grasping a drop-ring handpiece. The casket is fitted with a hinged hallmarked domed hinged cover accented with applied four oval bead designs, in addition to a large oval bead motif surmounting the domed portion. The cover opens to reveal the original leatherette and velvet jewellery fitment, comprised of a lift out tray with integrated ring holders to either side, in addition to a central well. Once removed, this allows access to a substantial second compartment. The interior of the cover features the original gilding; this has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion to an aesthetically pleasing mellow colour. Such large and original jewellery caskets are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition This antique jewellery casket in sterling silver is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The casket has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. The applied decoration is all very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body, in addition to part hallmarks to the interior of the cover and applied motifs are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
