About the Item

Two wonderful antique, figural snuff boxes in the form of heeled boots. Dutch, most probably from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The first, in a simple elongated shape, is decorated with tiny inlaid pins, forming the shape of a heart on the toe and a delicate pattern on the bottom of the boot. The second features a lovely carved buckle in the shape of a flower, with a rosette in the middle, and a carved plaque inserted on the lid. The plaque reads: 'Lord Hood's Flagship H.M.S. Victory' and has a miniature rendering of the vessel. 3.2" by 2.38" by 1.25" and 5" by 2.5" by 1.13" The use of snuff boxes emerged in the mid-17th century in Europe alongside the rising popularity of snuff, serving as a an accessory for holding powdered tobacco and evolving into highly decorated luxury items by the 18th and 19th centuries. They became not only fashionable accessories but also symbols of status and wealth. The HSM Victory was ordered in 1758, and is the world's oldest naval vessel still in commission.
