Art Nouveau sterling silver candelabras, 1900-1920

About the Item

Art Nouveau sterling silver candelabras, 1900-1920 A pair of candelabras in sterling silver in Art Nouveau style. This model was designed by Albert Mayer, Sculptor and Designer. The design of Albert Mayer is the "Eiffel" in Germany and Albert Mayer was employed and director at WMF (1884-1914). These candelabras, designed by Albert, were made of base material such as silver plated, brass, or pewter. These you see are candelabras are sterling silver, which are not made in Germany, but in America. Joseph and his brothers, Albert and Marcus Mayer, emigrated from Germany and established a business in Seattle, Washington, in about 1895. Joseph Mayer & Bros. from about 1895 to 1945 in Seattle. Albert and Marcus moved to Dawson City, Yukon, in 1897 during the Gold Rush there and opened a jewelry store. When they came back to Seattle a few years later, Joseph Mayer & Bros. changed its mark from a Fleur-de-lis in a triangle to a pick and shovel mark, representing the brothers' Gold Rush venture. Various versions of the mark were used, and the pick and shovel changed positions. In 1920 the business was split. Albert and Marcus established Mayer Brothers Wholesale Jewelry Co., while Joseph continued to do manufacturing as Joseph Mayer, Inc. The candelabras are marked with 925 (925/000) purity of silver. And a mark with the pick and shovel crossed. Only with the letter M beside this. (no extra B for the Brothers). The difference of the "Eiffel" design and these candelabras are the candle nozzles and the drip catchers and these are made of Silver. The candelabras went back to Europe (The Netherlands) and eventually ended up in the 1980s at a jewelry company H.A. Gunters, The Haque. The candelabras have been re-inspected and hallmarked after 1953 silver hallmarks ZI 9925/000) and the Juweliers hall mark of H.A. Gunters (mark used from 1980-) The Haque. (The Netherlands). The candelabras probably dates between 1900-1920 and measures 30.5 cm high, 24 cm wide and the depth is 10.2 cm. The weight is 1090 grams in total
