  • Jean Gautherin 19th Century Bronze Cow Grazing Sculpture E. Colin and Cie Paris
    By Jean Gautherin
    Located in San Diego, CA
This bronze cow grazing was sculpted by Parisian Jean Gautherin circa 1870. Many bronze cows have been sculpted over the centuries but few were sculpted grazing in the grass. This one has a mouthful of it, which is quite rare. She measures approximately 12" in length x 6 1/2" tall x 3 1/2" deep. She is signed by the artist and stamped by the renowned E. Colin and Cie foundry in Paris. "Jean Gautherin (28 December 1840 – 21 July 1890) was a French sculptor particularly known for his marble and bronze statues commissioned by the City of Paris. The following year his work was accepted at the Paris Salon where he exhibited annually until his death, although after winning medals in the Salons of 1868, 1870, and 1873, he exhibited hors de concours (out of competition). His first major success came in 1876 with a marble sculpture of Saint Sebastien...
