Pair of Exquisite French Empire Gilt Bronze Two-Light Candelabra ca 1810

About the Item

These candlesticks are ornate artifacts from the French Empire period, which dates back to the early 19th century, typically considered as the reign of Napoleon I from 1804 to 1814. This era is known for its classical designs and motifs that often included Greco-Roman elements, which we can see reflected in the figures of the women that resemble classical goddesses or muses. The craftsmanship is exquisite, with a lot of attention to detail. The figures are made of bronze, which was a common material for such decorative items during the Empire period, and the 'fire gilded' technique indicates that gold leaf was applied using heat, which allows the gold to adhere to the bronze. High carat gold refers to gold of a high purity, the gilding is of a very high quality. The design of the candlesticks is symmetrical and balanced, with the figures of the women serving as central focal points. The one who rests on the horns and the other who leans and looks at her companion add a dynamic element to the pieces, suggesting a narrative or connection between the two. The pieces being "equally beautiful to look at on all sides" they are fully finished in the round, making them three-dimensional artworks that can be admired from any angle. These "jewels in the interior" are not just functional items but are considered luxurious decorative pieces that would add a touch of elegance and historical value to an interior space. The marble base adds to the luxuriousness and stability of the candlesticks. Artifacts like these would have been owned by the wealthy and the elite during the Empire period, serving both as status symbols and functional decorative pieces. Perfect for collectors of Empire period artifacts or those with a keen interest in Napoleonic history and art.

French Paris c.1820 Superbly cast, in the Neo-Classical style, the five scrolling foliate candle branches enclosing central sconces issuing from a circular wreath supported by the winged figure of Victory (Nike), wearing diaphanous robes gathered by a sash above a long underskirt splaying out from above her ankles, with beautifully feathered wings flowing behind her as she looks straight ahead. Each figure standing on one foot, the other bent, resting on a plain sphere over a reeded palmette-cast baluster pedestal raised on square plinth.
