19th Century Bronze Ormolu Duc d'Enghein Appliques Electric Sconces Pair, France

About the Item

These are a pair of mid-19th century sconces (appliques) candelabras which were electrified. They are the Duc d'Enghien style sconces, as they were created by/for the Duke for his palace at Chantilly, where the originals can be seen as the last Duke gave the Palais de Chantilly to France in the mid-20th century. They have been masterfully electrified with silk wrapped wiring artfully hidden in the curves of the Rococo twists. They were modified to be used either with candles or electric bulbs. The sockets must be changed because the faux candles which were designed for the sconces (and the restoration of the Versailles palace) are unavailable in the USA, so the wiring is good to go, but one will have to have new sockets in the candle wells. The feature which makes these sconces so unique is the three different wax catchers on each of the sconces. (The 3 last images). They are adapted to put up quite easily... note the wooden stick coming out of the low back of the piece, that is where one puts a simple picture hook picture 11. The Duke is most famous for, as a Bourbon and a royalist, his fighting against Napoleon and was executed for this act by the French emperor. He was the only son of Louis Henri de Bourbon and Bathilde d'Orléans. As a member of the reigning House of Bourbon, he was a prince du sang (of the blood). He was born at the Château de Chantilly, the country residence of the Princes of Condé - a title he was born to inherit. He was given the title Duke of Enghien from birth, his father already being the Duke de Bourbon and the heir of the Prince of Condé, the Duke of Bourbon being the Heir apparent of Condé.
