Italian Antique 17th Century Hand carved wood Candelabra on a Renaissance base.

About the Item

An Italian Antique 17th Century "Mecca" gilding Wood Hand carved Bear "Orso" Candelabra on Renaissance base. The base and the bear are gilded with Mecca, a silver gilt technique that want to simulate the gold. The details of the carving, especially on the fur and the face of the bear are incredible. The base is a wonderful example of Renaissance motifs with a central "Mascherone" face, Acanthus leaves and curl wood cartouches. The bear is clutching the zoomorphic serpent shape candlestick holder. This candelabra was covered with a thick layer of plaster, painted in red and transformed in to a lamp base in the early 20th Century as you can see on the two last pictures. It has been professionally restored to the original conditions. *please inquire for further questions and more detail pictures.
