Italian Rococo Style Pair of Silver Candlesticks

About the Item

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Particular silver candlesticks were made between 1950 and 1955 by a small workshop in Florence; they were made on commission for a noble family of the city, so they were never put on the market, for this reason, they have only the silver mark 800 thousandths and not the state mark; the skillful Mastercraftsman executed them with a perfect and elaborate fusion and then finished with a meticulous chiseling; the craftsman was inspired by the Rococo style, creating two unique, exceptional and exclusive works certainly satisfying the request of his clients. The term Rococo derives from the French word rocaille, the term indicated the artificial rocks, stones, and shells that were used for the decoration of fountains, gardens, and caves and is considered an evolution of the late Baroque; it evokes and reflects the aristocratic taste of court life, its characteristics are recognizable for the great elegance and opulence of the forms, the branched undulations in playful curls and light floral arabesques. Measures: cm 10 x 10 H cm 24. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

Particular pair of toilet bottles in cut and ground by hand crystal; for their execution it was used crystal with a percentage of lead of 30%; the high lead content, instead of calcium present in the common glass, gives the crystal a remarkable hardness, exceptional transparency, and a high refractive index; with the techniques of cutting, grinding and polishing, scrupulously performed by hand, extraordinary light effects and reflections were created; the bottles with the ball body are surmounted by a silver neck and a hinged lid finely chiseled with Victorian motifs. They bear the Classic English silver punches from which we can tell that they were produced in the Victorian style in the city of Birmingham in 1907 (Edward VII) by the firm Phineas Harris Levi & Joseph Wolfe Salaman. The company was founded in 1870 in Birmingham on Northampton Street, in 1872 moved to larger premises on Hockley Street and in 1885 the business was finally moved to a prestigious building on Newhall Street. • Rococo Silver Candlesticks by Alexander Johnson
    By Alexander Johnston
    Located in New Orleans, LA
An outstanding pair of sterling silver candlesticks by English silversmith Alexander Johnston. Reflecting the mid-18th century Georgian taste for the Rococo style, these candlesticks feature deeply chased decoration, from shells and palms to acanthus and rosettes, as well as an engraved armorial on each pedestal. Their exuberant yet balanced design is characteristic of the sophisticated style brought to England by French Huguenot silversmiths in the 1700s. Alexander Johnston first entered his mark in 1747 and work such as his, as well as that of artists like the celebrated Paul de Lamerie, indicated the adoption of French forms in all of the decorative arts, from furniture to textiles, hailing the dramatic shift from the more restrained classical manner. Excellent condition. Hallmarked London, 1751 10 ¾” high Reference: English goldsmiths and their marks, 2nd ed., 1921, Sir Charles James Jackson.
