This classic pair of 19th century Spanish church altar candlesticks are of large size (over one-half meter or 26 inches tall) and can make for an eye-catching accent in a wide variety of interiors - mixing well in traditional settings or presenting a dramatic moment of contrast within a clean and modern environment. Originally used in a religious context, their simple architectural baluster forms are easily adaptable to the secular world. The brass is bright, but not overly polished, having a subtle and authentic patina of age and use. The use of candles has been part of the Catholic ritual since probably the 12th, and definitely the 13th century. Bishop William Durand of Mende (c. 1230-96) wrote in his Rationale Divinorum Officiorum that "at both corners of the altar a candlestick is placed to signify the joy of two Peoples who rejoiced at the birth of Christ," and "the cross is placed on the altar between two candlesticks." The use of candles was widespread and well-documented by the 16th century with at least two lit during any celebration, and four or six candles used for Sunday Mass or a holy day...
