About the Item

A rare and elegant pair of English candlesticks, probably made circa 1799 by the workshop of Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) after a design by William Chambers (1723-1796). Gilt and patinated bronze, the base of Carrara marble. Candle holders are supported by three legs of patinated bronze with three paws at the bottom and with three griffin heads holding the candleholder. As a hidden part of the construction, a "halfpenny" copper coin dated 1799 from the reign of King George III (1738-1820) has been used. In 1797, Matthew Boulton was commissioned by The Royal Mint of England to make the new halfpennies. They were minted until 1806 and are all are dated 1799. To use a coin minted by the Boulton Mint in each candlestick as part of the construction is possibly a signature, why use the coins instead of a plain metal plate? Other stylistic features besides high quality and advanced design are the use of griffons that Chambers is known for, and the design of the candleholder stripe decoration of which there are very similar designstudies for by Chambers to be found in the V&A Museum collections. See ex. photo (V&A) Boulton made many objects after designs by William Chambers, Robert Adam and other famous architects of the time for the British Royal family and the wealthy elite. Matthew Boulton, (1728-1809) was a pioneer in the production of English ormolu, he had a well-known and in-demand production of "objects de luxe" in England during the second half of the 18th century. He used design drawings by the great architects of the time. William Chambers, Sir William, was born in Gothenburg in 1723 and died in London in 1796. He was a Swedish-British court architect and garden and landscape architect working in London. Chambers trained as an architect in Paris and Rome and is considered the most important English architect of the late 18th century. He was inspired by East Indian architecture and Chinese architecture in connection with three trips for the Swedish East India Company In 1757, Chambers was appointed drawing teacher for the Prince of Wales, later George III, and at the same time laid out gardens and buildings. In 1761 he became the first court architect with George III. Chambers was in 1768 one of the founders of the Royal Academy of Arts, His architecture has an emphasis on neoclassicism with Somerset House as the prime example, executed and extended 1776-96. For the Swedish court, he made drawings for the gardens at Svartsjö Castle and Ulriksdal Castle. Of Swedish buildings, drawings for Partille manor can be mentioned in the first place.

Replacements made: The chains are probably later. It is quite common that they get lost thru the years of use and are replaced. Wear consistent with age and use. The gilding is in very good condition. The marble is slightly worn and with some patina.
