Pair of Candlesticks, Mahogany and Brass, George III England Late 18th C.
About the Item
A Pair of Candlesticks in Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) and Brass. George III. Made in England during the late 18th century.
Richly decorated and filled with rare and intricate detail, these candlesticks consist of a base and column in mahogny (Swietenia mahagoni) topped with a brass candleholder in the form of an urn. The mahogny base and column are intricately carved with the lower half of the column being in the shape of a spiraling and twisting Solomonic column, most commonly found in much earlier Baroque pieces and quite rare in combination with the otherwise prevailing neoclassicism of George III, which makes itself known in the upper half of the candlesticks with a more traditional classical column and the urn, which functions as the candleholder.
