About the Item

Sophie Dries Architect is a Paris based design studio run by the architect Sophie Dries since fall 2014, when she was 28. After graduating as an architect from Paris Malaquais Architecture School located in the Beaux Arts, she started to design exhibitions for Musée D’Orsay. In her following positions, she became a project manager on Villas in St. Tropez and Munich, as well as on high standard apartments in Paris and abroad. She has been collaborating for several years with multiple luxury interior design and architecture offices in Paris such as Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Pierre Yovanovitch and Christian Liaigre. Sophie Dries also studied at L’Ecole Du Louvre, specializing in contemporary art advising. She has been in charge of collectors private projects, such as installations, hotel art programs and corporate art investments in Asia (Seoul and Shanghai). The Traces Collection is named after the idea of scars in the ceramics. The intersections that the pottery master makes the different knives while the stoneware is uncooked. The vases and the candleholders were made based on the design of Sophie Dries, the metal parts are first realized by Michael Moore and then assembled with the ceramics after they were cooked twice by Thomas Vivant. The book ends are made in black patinated steel and unique natural stones (such as quartz or pyrite) are fixed on it; Sophie Dries plays on traditional arts and craft materials (raw steel worked by hand tools and pottery on a turntable, no mold and no mechanic technics were used) it is always twisted with a contemporary design (minimal shapes and radical proportions). The contrast between black clay and shiny metals were important as much as the paradox between smooth surfaces and scarified textures in the ceramics. We first showed the work of Sophie Dries at PAD London 2016, along with the creations of Pierre Bonnefille. Sophie’s technique is unique as she uses stone projection for some of her pieces, which conveys mixed feelings of strength and delicacy.
