This vintage brass lamp was manufactured by E. Thomas & Williams, a renowned company with a rich history in lamp production. Founded in 1860 by Evan Thomas in Aberdare, Wales, the company became known for its high-quality lamps used by miners. This particular lamp, dating back to the early 20th century, showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of E. Thomas & Williams. Made of solid brass, it features a traditional design commonly associated with Welsh miners' lamps. The lamp is in its original condition, exhibiting minor wear consistent with age and use, which adds to its authentic and nostalgic appeal. E. Thomas & Williams gained recognition for their lamps through exhibitions and awards, including a gold medal at the London Mining Exhibition. The company's lamps were not only popular in the UK but also exported to various countries worldwide, becoming a symbol of Welsh craftsmanship and quality. During World War I, the company contributed to the war effort by producing shell casings. In the post-war years, they diversified their production to include steel parts and a battery-operated "Lightbuoy" used for locating survivors of torpedoed ships. Despite the decline of the coal industry, E. Thomas & Williams found success in the gift market, producing Cambrian Miners' Lamps for presentation to dignitaries. To this day, the company operates from a factory in Robertstown, employing a small staff and continuing to produce finely crafted lamps for global distribution. Their Cambrian Safety Lamp remains an essential tool for detecting dangerous gas build-ups in collieries, ships' holds, and sewers.
