A Pair of Worcester Porcelain Griffin Candlesticks
About the Item
This is now the second pair of these candlestick that I have owned. The only other that I know was a pair owned by Brian Haughton who wrote thus, "Although the heraldic griffin can be found as a support for elaborate vase forms or urns and in some cases a scalded down version can be found as a finial, the use as an incorporated form within a candlestick is highly unusual and of the greatest rarity, creating a highly exotic form for the lavish Regency interior."
Reference: The British dealer Eddy Bardawil has a pair of George III period bronze and white marble griffin candlesticks and one can clearly see these as an strong inspiration for the present porcelain pair.
He references Sir William Chambers who illustrated a related design for "a griffin candlestick in 1791, in the third edition of his Treatise on the Decorative Part of Civil Architecture. The design is an additional plate illustrating 'ornamental utensils, designed for the Earl of Charlemont, for Lord Melbourne, and for some decorations for my own house'.
Matthew Boulton made several 'griffin' vases and it is possible that Chambers provided him with the design or model (N. Goodison, Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton, London, 1974, pp. 157-158, pl. 89-93).
A pair of these candlesticks is at Harewood House, Yorkshire. They are illustrated in a recent guide book (circa 1995) in Princess Mary's Sitting Room."
