Rare Edwardian Shibayama and Silver Miniature Carriage Clock

About the Item

Silver and Shibayama miniature carriage clock in original leather carry case. Exceptional Shibayama work on the silver case with carved semi precious stones. White enamel dial with roman numerals. The fine movement is of 8 day duration and regulated by a platform lever escapement. The shibayama technique was named after Shibayama Dosho who introduced it to Japan in the 18th century. It was used exclusively for items for import to the west and would have been undertaken by specialist Japanese craftsman resulting in a highly unusual luxury product. The items decorated in the Shibayama style range from vases, boxes and table screens to swords and items of fruit in ivory. However he cannot be said to have invented it, but as has been observed with many other Japanese applied arts the perfection of the method was mistaken for its origin. Original leather carry case signed under the lid 'Mann Goldsmith Gloucester'. Silver marks H & N, marks for Birmingham, and date mark 1903.
