A Chippendale Carved Walnut Tallcase Clock
About the Item
The bonnet with broken swan's neck pediment and urn finials above an arched glazed door flanked by turned columns and opening to the brass dial signed Adm Brant surrounded by filigreed spandrels; the long case with an arched door flanked by quarter columns, the waisted panelled box base on splayed bracket feet.
Adam Brant was one of the most prominent clockmakers active in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania--a recognized center of the art. A native of Germany, Brant had settled in New Hanover Township by 1763. He worked in the county for more than forty years and had a thriving business by the time of his death in 1804. Recognized by scholars as a "very fine craftsman" (Forman, Clockmakers of Montgomery County, p. 8), Brant produced clocks of such elegance that they are highly sought after by collectors to this day.
