About the Item

This Art Nouveau terracotta sculpture clock and lamp was created around 1887 by the renowned Friedrich Goldscheider manufactory in Vienna. The piece portrays an allegorical scene of a contemplative figure admiring three Muses — Melete (Study), Mneme (Memory), and Aoide (Song) — rendered in flowing robes with dynamic movement and expressive features. Each figure is hand-crafted and painted in naturalistic tones, with delicate transitions between color and form. The clock face is embedded in the central column and surrounded by an organic structure that seems to merge nature and myth. A unique feature of this piece is its dual functionality as both a clock and a lamp, reflecting Goldscheider's visionary fusion of art and design - an embody evocative storytelling. Signed Rosé on the base and bearing the serial number 2808 and (?)5, as well as the Friedrich Goldscheider Wien stamp, this sculpture exemplifies Viennese Secessionist ideals, merging symbolism, craftsmanship, and fine art. Founded in 1885, the Goldscheider factory quickly became one of Europe's most celebrated ceramic producers, presenting at the Universal Exhibitions in Barcelona (1888) and Paris (1889). Take into account that the colors on the items may vary depending on the type of lighting and the type of screen from which you see the images.
