Bleached Oak Horloge De Parquet Clock Case from Liege, Belgium, circa 1870

About the Item

Hand-carved in Liege, Belgium circa 1870, this horloge de parquet has a commanding presence. The oak wood has been bleached, revealing great graining to the tan colored wood. A thick base with cavetto molding on the top offers support to the statuesque trunk. The door has a center pierced carving resembling a wheel, set in between vertical rectilinear panels adorned with a scalloped leaf and foliate margent. Both sides are comprised of long inset rectangular panels with thin molding. The hood sits on top a cavetto molding at the top of trunk. It features a shaped piece of glass with a high arch and additional cavetto molding. A white face with black numerals (including date increments) is slotted in between a pair of rectangular glass panels on the sides, separated by foliate margents inside of a carved elongated rectangle, all beneath a shaped crown with thick molding. The timing mechanisms have been removed, rendering the clock face non-functional. Place our bleached horloge de parquet in a hallway, living room, or study for a fantastic decorative accessory that will instantly enhance the room.

  • Antique Bleached Oak Louis XVI Style Demoiselle Clock Case, circa 1890
    Located in Dallas, TX
After the rediscovery of the ancient Roman cities, Herculaneum and Pompeii (1709 and 1738, respectively), Neoclassical themes became popular. During the reign of Louis XVI, these elements were often paired with themes from nature to form highly carved pieces of furniture, such as this antique clock case. hand carved circa 1890 from oak, the shapely clock is referred to as a demoiselle. The original finish has been bleached, allowing the supple curves and intricate carvings to gain prominence. A large white clock face with blue numerals can be seen behind a circular pane of glass surrounded by raised molding adorned with cordate leaf tips. Two carvings (one with a pair of flowers and the other with a fringed linenfold swag) embellish the bonnet, between a molded crown with a subtle arch and recessed galbee sides. The bonnet rests on top of an hourglass shaped trunk that is festooned with two shaped panels with floral décor. A large roundel...

  • Bleached Renaissance Style Walnut Sgabello Chair from Italy, Circa 1870
    Located in Dallas, TX
A sgabello is an Italian chair that originated in the Renaissance. Originally designed to be displayed in a hallway (like a French side chair), sgabello were typically highly carved with some sort of familial crest or coat of arms incorporated into the décor. They were purely decorative, as the backrests were elaborately carved with protuberances and bulging motifs; comfort was not a primary concern. Hand-carved from walnut in Italy, circa 1870, our Renaissance style sgabello has recently been bleached, allowing the carvings to gain further prominence. The shaped seat has quarter round molding adorned with a series of niches that have been filled with trefoil leaves. Additional foliage has been shallowly incised to the top of the seat, with sprawling rinceaux surrounding a potted plant. The uniquely shaped seatback has several canted edges, topped with various Renaissance motifs. A pair of fragmented...

This majestic, bleached walnut commode was hand-carved by an Italian master in Florence, circa 1870. The details of the floral rinceaux, which are dotted with high relief mascarons are of the highest craftsmanship, beautifully eliciting the Renaissance style. Each of the three full-length drawers has a cabochon coat of arms with large foliate whorls emanating from behind it. The two coils next to the central cartouche have floral centers, while the following volutes are adorned with mascaron pulls, each drawer with a different pair of faces. An overhanging top with quarter round molding sits over a crenellated border, which has a pair of small drawers beneath separated by a large lion mascaron. Both drawers have mascaron pulls set inside an acanthus rinceau. All drawers are flanked by tall vertical pilasters, embellished with a curled acanthus margent punctuated with a mascaron, diminishing roundels, fruits, and linenfold. A shaped shield with a large grotesque is inset on each side and surrounded by thin quarter round molding. The impressive commode is supported by four monopodial lion paw feet beneath a border of infilled gadroon lobes. The walnut wood has been stripped, giving the chest of drawers a warm golden cream color. Our Renaissance style Florentine commode...
