Farcot / Carrier-Belleuse Pendulum Clock
About the Item
Horological ingenuity and artistry coalesce in this incredible French pendulum clock, the product of two of the most famed craftsmen of the 19th century. Known as the Farcot clock, the pendulum and movement of this clock were created by Henri-Eugène-Adrien Farcot, a celebrated horologist, industrialist, inventor, mechanical engineer and balloonist. He invented the conical movement used on this clock in 1855. Ordinary pendulum clocks in which the pendulum swings back and forth in a vertical plane had been invented by Christiaan Huygens much earlier in 1656. These ordinary pendulum clocks, when well-made, kept excellent time and were in widespread use when Farcot invented his conical alternatives.
In Farcot's clocks, the pendulum swings in a circle, tracing out a cone, instead of oscillating back and forth. His conical clock needs no escapement, and its second hand moves smoothly, instead of by tiny jerks. Because the pendulum needs room for its conical path, Farcot designed it so it would capture the viewer's eyes.
Many of Farcot's showpiece clocks were exhibited at various world fairs that became so popular in Europe after the London Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851. They were considered world-class works of art that fetched high prices, especially because each was attached to a full-size work of art by an established sculptor. The statue of this clock was created by one of the most important sculptors of his day, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. He was a founding member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and was also made an officer of the Légion d'honneur. He was also appointed by Emperor Napoleon III as the director of the nation-owned Sèvres factory. Perhaps most famously, he was the teacher of Rodin and many of his later sculptures were crafted with Rodin’s help.
