Rare and stunning Gothic Revival table clock by Lenzkirch. For the collectors of rare and truly stylish antiques we have recently been able to purchase this wonderful Gothic table or mantel clock. The overall design is remarkable, but the combination of the craftsmanship of the carved oak, the inlaid solid bronze Gothic elements and the timeless dial face with the four angel masks is what takes this clock to the next level. The solid bronze inlaid Gothic decorations in the front/base include the trefoil symbol for the trinity and also a quatrefoil symbol, an ancient symbol for (among other things) good luck. Other striking elements are the handles on the sides, the rosettes on either side of the dial face and ofcourse the entire row of Gothic rosettes just below the 'roof'. This relatively large and heavy quality table clock also comes with a strong and square brass door which is inlaid with a near-mint, thick beveled glass window. Apart from some minor wear (consistent with age and use) to the silvered circular part where the Roman numerals are, this dial face too is a work of beauty and in superb condition. The bronze inlay in the front of the roof as well as the brass 'window' with the stylized quatrefoils in the back door of this clock, are just some of the other details that makes you want to stop and look and enjoy the craftsmanship that created this one of a kind clock. When you find a piece this good then you can rest assure that there is a maker's mark. This work of beauty was made in 1893 and marked by top quality clockmakers Lenzkirch of Germany. Not many people outside of Europe know this, but they are known for making some of the best clock designs AND clock mechanisms in the history of European clock making. The original and perfect working, eight days clock mechanism runs smoothly with a very low-noise tic-toc and it strikes a cool gong sound on the whole hours. On the 15 minutes mark, it strikes a single ding-dong, on the half hours it strikes a double ding dong and on the 45 minutes mark it strikes a triple ding dong. For the ding-dong sound you need ofcourse a second hammer striking a second spiral gong. When you look at our images of this Lenzkirch clock and striking mechanism (taken through the door from the back), you may not immediately see it, but the quality of the engineering and the thickness and weight of all the individual brass parts really is at a very high level. As shown in another image, the antique key for winding both the clock and striking mechanism also is included.
