Early and Fine Bronze, Ormolu and Specimen Marble Clock with Cupid
About the Item
A large, fine and exquisite, early antique French clock depicting cupid holding a sharpened golden arrow. It is of stunning quality and fully serviced and tested by our clockmakers. It is of finest ormolu (finely gilded bronze or bronze doré) mounted on beautifully figured red specimen marble. Cupid is finely modelled in bronze with a lovely, rich patination. The bronze work is by Pailly of Rue Chapon, Paris. Pailly is listed in Tardy, Dictionnaire Des Horlogers.
The stunning dial is designed as a swag of ribbons in ormolu, set with 12 individual enamel cartouches. The rear door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. This type of design does not have a glazed bezel to the front.
The early French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition. It is is the earlier version of the Pendule De Paris movement with a silk suspension. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. There is a video available showing the clock running and striking.
Condition of the case is excellent, the gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition, no damage to the cartouches. The dial centre has been polished at some time. The bronze figure has a lovely patina and has been lacquered at some time to preserve this. The marble is in excellent condition with just some tiny nibbles to the edges. A beautiful clock to add to your collection.

- Fine and Early Sevres Porcelain and Ormolu Antique French ClockBy Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, Henri Picard, Raingo FrèresLocated in Belper, DerbyshireA fine and early clock, the case by Henri Picard of Paris and the movement by Raingo Frères. It is beautifully made of ormolu (mercury fire gilded bronze doré) mounted with exquisitely painted Sèvres style porcelain with a Bleu Celeste ground. The front panel shows a young couple, tending a flock of sheep in a tranquil country setting, a sleepy town in the distance. Above the dial she sits in fine clothes and the urn to the top shows them older together, a story of their love. Side panels are beautifully decorated with bows, flowers and a quiver of arrows. Other panels are delicately decorated with over glaze gilt decoration with applied porcelain 'jewels'. The porcelain is all signed to the reveres and numbered with movement number '1453', unusually the case is also numbered. The dial is porcelain with its original finely cut brass Breguet hands and is signed for the clockmaker Raingo Frères. The rear bezel is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. Please note that this design does not have a front glass over the dial. The French movement is of high quality and is by Raingo Freres. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding clean and bright with only slight wear and discolouration. Porcelain is also excellent with no damage and hardly any wear. A few porcelain jewels are missing from the top left hand panel where the clock has been held for winding. The dial has a slight firing fault near the number five. Zacharie Raingo was apprenticed in Paris in 1790 and went on to establish Raingo Frères in 1813.
