Large Antique French Ormolu Rococo Clock Set, Dolphins

About the Item

A stunning and large original antique French ormolu clock set by A. D. Mougin. It is of the most beautiful Rococo style, featuring a dolphin in a niche, and decorated with 'C' scrolls, acanthus leaves, laurel sprigs and floral swags. Candelabra have 4 elaborate acanthus arms held aloft on slender columns surrounded by twirling sprigs of laurel. Candelabra bases also feature a dolphin in a niche. The set is beautifully made and finished in ormolu (finely gilded bronze doré). The dial is porcelain enamel on copper with finely pieced and engraved ormolu hands. The French movement is of high quality and is by A. D. Mougin. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also in excellent condition just an occasional light mark. Candelabra are slightly distorted and the central drip trays may have been replaced at sometime. A. D. Mougin clockmaker's mark on the movement backplate Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.     Repaired: Fully overhauled and tested by our clockmaker. Wear consistent with age and use. Original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also in excellent condition just an occasional light mark. Candelabra are slightly distorted and the central drip trays may have been replaced.

    12 of 19 A very large and fine antique French clock set, circa 1880. It is of Rococo design in the manner of Juste Aurele Meissonier and boldly modeled in gilt bronze. Waisted keyhole shape with acanthus leaf shoulders, 'C' scroll feet standing on its original integral serpentine base. To the top is a putti and a musical instrument. His designs for candelabra and other objects appear in the Dousieme livre des Oeuvres de J. A. Messonnier, Livre de Chandeliers de Sculpture en Argent published by Gabriel Huquier in the 1740s.
