Marble and Fire-Gilt-Bronze Directoire-Era Portico Clock Retour d'Egypte Style

About the Item

A small, svelte French portico clock from the Directory Era, 1795-99. In the "Retour d’Egypte” style that became quite the hot thing following Napoleon’s - ahem! - incursion into Egypt in 1798, where he’d been sent by the Directory. What was the Directory? It sounds better using the French “Directoire,” but it was just a group of five bureaucrats who oversaw things in following the 1794 Thermidor reaction to the, suffice it to say, overheated revolutionary events of the first half of the 1790s. Resources were scarce during the period, and French artisans were forced to do more with less, which, naturally, they succeeded in doing with aplomb. This clock is a minimalist joy, two caryatids posing on a Carrara marble base supporting a silk movement with an enamel face and glass back cover. The clock is in working order and includes a key and an elegant pendulum (which may not be original but is certainly of the time).
