George I Lantern Clock by Thomas Reeve, Harlestone

About the Item

George I lantern clock by Thomas Reeve of Harlestone One-piece column turned corner posts with integral tall vase turned finials and domed brass bell bearer, surmounted by a tall vase turned central finial. Plain brass side doors with open-ended turnkey on turned ball feet. Raised, silvered chapter ring with Fleur De Lys half hour markers and Roman numerals. The dial center contains floral engraving and bears the signature Thomas Reeve, Harlestone. With a pierced steel single hour hand. Thirty hour rope driven movement, decorated Hammer stop and originally with verge escapement later converted to anchor escapement and long pendulum, count wheel hour strike on a large centrally mounted bell. Original weight and pendulum. The clock standing on a later oak bracket with carved decoration, circa 1710 Thomas Reeve was born circa 1660 and died circa 1734. He married Miss Ann Proctor of Harleston on the 10th September 1700 and he is recorded as having been church warden in Harleston in 1719 and again from 1728-1730. A lantern clock by Thomas Reeve is recorded which was originally verge escapement and later converted to anchor escapement. It is pictured in Norfolk and Norwich clocks and Clockmakers by Clifford and Yvonne Bird. Thomas Reeve is also listed in Brian Loomes informative book ‘Lantern clocks and their makers’.
