A Rare Chippendale Mahogany Tall Clock, Newport, Rhode Island
About the Item
The arched and molded top has a narrow tympanum of figured mahogany above a cross banded tombstone-form dial door. The door is flanked by reeded colonnettes with ring turned capitals and bases. The sides of the case have rectangular windows and half round smooth colonnettes at the rear. The dial door opens to a wonderfully painted dial in terrific original condition. The lunette is decorated with an elaborate gilt painted urn with floral and scrolled flourishes. The dial is framed with finely painted polychrome floral blossoms with gilt borders. The clock face has Roman numerals to demark the hour and an outer ring of Arabic numerals to demark the minutes. The dial is fitted with a seconds bit above the center arbor and a calendar window below the center arbor. The center arbor is fitted with cut and scrolled steel hands and seconds bit has a delicate pointer. The dial is signed in flowing cursive on the back “Walter Cornell”. This technique of signing clocks on the back of the dial is commonly found on other Rhode Island examples.
The brass movement, which has recently been serviced, is in good running order and is of an eight-day duration. The movement is fitted with an original wood shaft pendulum with a brass capped lead bob and a pair of tin can weights. The movement rests on a wooden “saddle board” and is original to the case.
The hood transitions into the waist section with a flared throat molding. The case has a molded and paneled tombstone-form pendulum door. This hinged door has a vibrantly figured mahogany panel. The door is fitted with a lock and an elaborate brass keyhole escutcheon.
The waist section transitions to the base with a flared molding. The rectangular base has a cut corner panel with a similar molded edge. This panel is also set with a richly grained piece of mahogany. The bottom of the base transitions with a stepped molding to fine original ogee bracket feet. The form of these feet are a distinctive Rhode Island pattern.
