Sedan Chair Carriage Clock
About the Item
Sedan chairs were chairs in which members of the upperclass were carried to and from their destinations by porters, or chairmen. Used in many different countries, sedans were very popular in England and other parts of Europe, as they prevented the owner from having to step on the mud- and waste-covered streets, and they could pass in streets too narrow for a carriage.

Known commonly as “grandfather” clocks, it was not until the late 19th century that longcase clocks garnered this name.
