About the Item

A François Linke clock made of gilt-bronze and white marble. This clock is an interesting piece as it is cast after a work by the famous French sculptor Clodion, also known as Claude Michel (1734-1814), who was known for his work in the Rococo style. The gilt bronze in the shape of a female faun figure who holds out grapes to her child. This was a popular subject in Clodion’s sculptures and many terracotta figures and copies exist of: fauns, satyrs and nymphs. Moreover, this piece marks a period of Linke’s work where he was fusing ‘old master’ works with new ideas and interpretations; something that he became very well known for following the Exhibition of 1900. Marked F.Linke, A Paris, on the enamel face of the clock. The back of the bronze sculpture reads; ‘ F.LINKE’ and ‘CLODION’. To note: This model of a clock is titled in Linke's pocket notebook as "Pendule groupe faunesse et dépouille lion, socle marbre blanc". It was an expensive model with a retail price of 925 francs. An identical clock has been sold at Sotheby's New York, A Private Collection, Volume II, 19 April 2007, and in Bonhams 2014 sale, 'Fine European Furniture, Sculpture & Works of Art'. On the artist: François Linke (1855-1946) was a leading Parisian ébéniste. His most prominent pieces include works in the style that he created for the 1900 Exhibition in Paris. The exhibition called to create pieces in the manner of the masters, but to avoid copying them. Linke did this with his work when he created pieces fusing a historicist interpretation of the transition between Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, and fusing them with contemporary ideas coming from the art nouveau. Linke had many important commissions throughout the years, including a commission to furnish the Ras al-Tin Palace in Alexandria for King Fuad of Egypt. His showrooms were to be found in the Place Vendôme, as well as the Faubourg St. Antoine in Paris.
