18th Century Louis XVI Cartel Clock By Le Nepveu

About the Item

A rare 18th century ormolu cartel clock by Nicolas-Antoine Le Nepveu a Paris . This exceptional Cartel clock in a gilt bronze or Ormolu case still with its original mechanism. The 8 day movement strikes on a bell, with its original star cut strike count wheel and pendulum. Nicolas - Antoine Le Nepveu (1736-1796) supplied clocks as Ouvrier libre c.1767. In 1773 he became an accomplished master clockmaker, "par privilge de l' hospital de la trinite". He worked in the Rue de Salkle au Compte and in the Rue Magloire. This is an impressive clock, on much larger scale than ordinary cartel clocks measuring nearly a metre tall. The case with foliate scroll work, urn finial and Dryad mask still retains much of its original mercury gilding. The original enamel dial has one minor blemish which can be rectified. This clock is shown unserviced and in original condition. Any restoration work can be carried out at the customer’s request. The movement will be serviced and will carry our 2 year guarantee, please be aware any servicing required will take a minimum of 4 weeks from purchase before shipping.

  • An Extremely Fine and Rare 19th Century Ormolu Cartel Clock
    By Samuel Marti

An exquisite Louis XV style gilt and patinated bronze cartel clock. The eight-day two train bell striking movement, with vertically planted platform cylinder escapement and stamped with S. Marti et Cie MEDAILLE D'ARGENT. 1889 roundel and serial number 647 to backplate. The dial formed as a deep blue and gold flecked enamel dome applied with gilt Roman numerals and stars set within billowing clouds interspersed with sunburst rays. Applied with three patinated bronze cherubs in flight, around the dial attending to a floral garland. Amongst the clouds can be found a pair of doves, a horn and arrows, a quiver and bow. This coupled with the cherubs and flower garland would suggest this clock was made as a love token or wedding present. The symbolism of love, marriage and fertility, the cherubs representing the three Greek Erotes...
