About the Item
A rare and iconic Model ABW-35 BRAUN wall clock designed by Dietrich Lubs in 1988.
With the ABW 35, Lubs devised a way for the clock to blend into whatever background it's placed over by making the face transparent. Equally, the numbers and hands float over whatever background the clock is hanging on. The rim of the clock is made of an opaque tubular plastic that acts to frame the clear face. The numbers are inscribed in charcoal grey and combine the corresponding hours and minutes at the quarter-hour points. The minute and hour hands are both made of charcoal grey plastic and are behind the transparent front facia and the mechanism, which is housed in a central circular charcoal grey plastic casing, is unconventionally placed on the front of the clock. There's a small clear plastic hook on the back rim, for hanging the clock.
The clock is in very good vintage condition, with minor marks and light scratches commensurate with 30+ years of careful use and is in full working order and keeps very good time. The clock takes one LR1/E90 battery.
Dietrich Lubs was a pioneering figure in the field of industrial design, whose work has had a lasting impact on the design world. His designs are characterized by their simplicity, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, and his philosophy of design continues to influence designers today. He was a senior member of the Design Department at Braun AG from 1967 to 1972 and worked closely with Dieter Rams (head of design at Braun from 1961 to 1995), together producing some of the best examples of 'Functionalist' design. Their designs made Braun a household name and have influenced a whole generation of contemporary designers, including Jony Ive (of Apple fame) and Thomas Heatherwick amongst others.
