Antique Marble & Bronze Napoleon 3 Inkstand by Marcel Debut Salon Des Beaux-Arts

About the Item

Rare and important French Napoleonic ink stand with female sculpture. This hand-crafted and sizable ink stand of marble and gilt bronze is signed by the renowned French sculptor Marcel Debut (Paris, 1865-1933). The perfect anatomy and stunning details of the female nude reveal the work of a master sculptor and a top quality bronze caster. The gilt bronze scrolling motifs and the inkwell have very fine details also. The hand-crafted and layered marble base has the perfect shape, size and color to make this desk piece have exactly the right balance. The combination of the gilt bronze elements and the green, black and white marble is a match made in heaven and this desk piece will never fail to impress you or anyone visiting. The part of the signature that reads Salon des Beaux-Arts is what takes this piece to the next level in terms of rarity and collectibility, because this Salon was a gathering place where only the top Parisian artist would meet and work and exhibit. There are two chips off the marble. The first can be seen in the upper left corner in image 3 and in image 8 on the far left, above the inlaid scrolling bronze flowers is the second one. Finally, the marble plaque on which the lady is writing, was (at some point in time) broken in half (horizontally). It was a clean break and it is glued back together professionally. This antique is not only a heavyweight in terms of quality, design and rarity, because it actually weighs 7 kilograms or 15.5 pounds lbs. If you are looking for the ideal inkstand for your antique desk or sidetable then this Napoleonic antique could be flying your way soon.
