About

Victorian leather stationery box A good quality late 19th century Victorian leather bound oak stationery box. The black leather exterior has a tooled decoration, a plated lock plate to the front with a military style folding handle and a Bramah lock and key. The locking plate has the makers name Parkins & Gotto London. William Parkins and Henry Jenkin Gotto established Parkins & Gotto at 2, Hanway Street, Oxford Street, London in the 1840s. In the 1850s the company moved to 23 & 25, Oxford Street and were noted for carrying a huge variety of high quality stock. The box has a fitted interior, the lid having a fall forward panel that has a lattice letter rack and a polished oak interior. The base of the box has a pair of lids and a single long lid. The pair of lids open to a storage area and the reverse of the lids has a pen holder to one side and a storage satchel to the other. The long narrow lid opens to an inkwell (glass with a plated screw top), a lift out tray and a storage compartment. Underneath the tray is a pen storage compartment with a secret compartment to the right. The interior leather and tabs are all tooled and the metal mounts, catches and hinge are plated. The box is in good condition with some very minor scuff marks to the outside, circa 1880. Measures: Height 10.5cm (4.1 inches) Width 38cm (15 inches) Depth 30cm (11.8 inches).
