About the Item

Jayne Walker creates monumental landscapes in miniature form. Their power is extraordinary, they speak of the universal relationship between nature, the human heart and landscape. As with all great artists her work transcends scale. The small scale of her work is no barrier to the experience of the viewer, indeed her skill is that the viewer has the sense of being in the landscape distilled into each piece. This is why her work has a mesmerizing and intriguing quality. Indeed, presented on a table or other surface her sculptures create a ‘still space’ which recalibrates the human spirit in just a glance. Inspired by contour maps, geological illustrations and 19th century travel globes, her work is reminiscent of a miniature Earth that you can hold in your hand. Fascinated with the way a line flows around a form, enclosing it and giving sense to the mass she combines cast and carved three-dimensional form with surface pattern. This sculpture is from her most recent body of work entitled ‘Land Vessels’. These are inspired by the various effects of erosion on the landscape and geological strata. A boat builder, her father has also been an important influence as Jayne seeks to emulate his accurate eye for line and form. The sculptures are carved from Crystacal plaster which has first been cast into a former. The material allows an unusual combination of casting and carving, as well as detailing with pencil which is then fixed. The plaster has a perfectly smooth, cool and soft finish and the textural contrasts invite handling.
