Ralph Todd was born in 1856. He trained in London and continued his studies in Belguim, France and Holland. He also spent time studying in Paris and in Brittany, painting almost always in watercolours. It was in Brittany that he met and became good friends with Dublin born Stanhope Alexander Forbes. A particularly good quality copper and brass fire fender with beautiful and elaborately cast sinuous solid brass corner spandrels of Art Nouveau design and a lovely planished copper front panel all set on flattened and beaded brass bun feet. In excellent original condition without damage and of a good large size, and with only minor and superficial marks and small dings consistent with age and careful use. In the 19th century most of the rooms in a house had a chimney for open fires and the fender would be placed to denote the hearth and stop logs rolling off and reaching the rug or soft furnishings.
