Giuseppe Lavagna, Italian oil on canvas still life with vase and flower The painting, of beautiful workmanship and in good condition, represents a sumptuous composition of flowers that adorns a copper vase. The still life rests on a stone balustrade, on which some flowers have fallen, and beyond which you can see a garden with green trees that mark the horizon. In the sky stand vaporous white and grey clouds. Of clear belonging to the Italian and Neapolitan school, the canvas shows undisputed similarities with the style of the painter Giuseppe Lavagna (1684-1724). It is one of the protagonists of Neapolitan naturamortism of the first 18th century. The 18th century in Naples, in the field of still life, is much appreciated and sought after by both the antiques market and the critics. It was appreciated and much in demand in the past by the great collectors and clients, rich owners of the most beautiful palaces in Naples and surroundings. Today it is still being studied, and Giuseppe Lavagna himself has very little information. There are many artists who tried and their figures are slowly emerging from oblivion, allowing the critics to outline their stylistic characteristics, grouping corpus of works under some names mainly thanks to the discovery of signed works. From the stylistic comparison emerge some possible comparisons that allow to return to the catalogue of the works of Giuseppe Lavagna the canvas in question. Giuseppe Lavagna, as mentioned, is active in Naples in the first half of the 18th century. The Neapolitan biographer and painter Bernardo De Dominici informs us that Lavagna is a disciple of Andrea Belvedere known as Abate Andrea (1652-1732) “but he enlarged a little 'over his flowers and painted with more freedom”. It also tells us that the artist became blind and died in 1724 at forty. The artwork documents well the expressive qualities of Giuseppe Lavagna, able to create works never banal and intricate with a descriptive capacity, of considerable visual impact, in the rendering of the effects of light, color and matter. There are on-going artistic historical studies useful to delineate the various comparisons with other works of Lavagna and deepen, for the work in question, the artistic and cultural path of the author. There is also an intervention to remove the yellowed paint in order to recover the full usability of the lively chromatic palette that distinguishes the work of this master.
