Sculptural 18th Century Italian Gold Leaf Figure of Christ on a Calcite Cluster

About the Item

Sculptural 18th century Italian gold leaf wood fragment figure of Christ (Florence) on calcite crystal cluster in matrix. The calcite crystal cluster is from Elmwood Mine, Tennessee. It is an example of the world's finest crystallized calcite. With the unusual formation of sphalerite and galena, it is unequaled by those from any other part of the world (referenced from the "American Mineral Treasure" book, pg. 337). The gold leaf hand-carved figure of Christ originally part of a crucifix from a church in Italy. The gold leaf painted figure of Christ shows that it probably came from a significant and ornate church. The sacred piece has been preserved and mounted onto the calcite crystal to create a new modern work. The piece is put together by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she created the piece and the period shows that the figure of Christ is originally 18th century. The Italian 18th century figure of Christ and calcite crystal cluster are put together in a sculptural form - creating a historical significant yet contemporary piece - Interpreting the past to transform a piece into something entirely original, evolving in its own right. This piece is currently exhibiting in the Museo de' Medici in Florence, Italy as part of The Crucifix Collection. The Museo de' Medici is located in the monumental Rotonda Brunelleschi which is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Florence. In addition to preserving the history of the Medici dynasty, the museum is also committed to exhibiting precious collections of works of art, historical relics, original documents, faithful reconstructions and multimedia installations.

  • Crucifix on Calvary, Called Plague of Christ, France, Early 18th Century
    Located in Milan, IT
Crucifix on Calvary, called 'Pestis Christi' or Crucifiix Pestis 'Plague of Christ' or Plague Crucifix). The sculpture is composite, made with heterogeneous materials: wax, wood, papier-mâché. The octagonal base is slightly raised and supports the calvary, symbolized by rocks, from which the crucifix rises, made with intentionally unfinished boards and with marked veins. The depicted Christ is peculiar: he shows scarified skin all over his body. Masterfully crafted in wax. They are the plagues of the plague that Christ, 'Agnus Dei' takes charge of with salvific value, for the salvation of the world. At his feet the ordeal full of symbols: evil (snake) with the apple, the 'Memento mori' of human bones...
