Dominique Zinkpè - Poésie Humaine

About the Item

Steeped in the cultural practices of his native Benin, Dominique Zinkpè’s work is imbued with a guiding reverence for tradition and a keen sensitivity to contemporary concerns. The towering bronze form was made using the ancient lost wax casting method, one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques. Poésie Humaine was molded from one of Zinkpè’s original wooden sculptures. Each figure of the totemic assemblage of figurines had been individually hand-carved. The wooden Ibeji dolls evoke the sacred Yoruba concept of twinship. In Yoruba culture, twins are considered to possess special powers; the two bodies are believed to share a singular soul. If a twin dies in infancy, the family has a wooden figure carved to represent the deceased. According to their animist beliefs, the family will care for the doll as if it were alive, feeding, bathing, clothing it, and performing rituals on significant occasions to ensure the balance of the shared soul.
