Escher-Inspired Sculpture "Gravity" by Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof

About the Item

Crafted by the famed jeweler and sculptor Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof, this compelling stainless steel and polymer sculpture brings to life the work of the great M.C. Escher. Escher was renowned for his so-called impossible creations such as this, which was inspired by his 1952 mixed media work Gravitation. Zadora imparts a remarkable degree of skill and planning in the construction of the piece, bringing Escher’s 2-dimensional mathematically-inspired work in to the third dimension. The design itself seems to defy gravity, illustrating the genius of these two artistic greats, Escher and Zadora. During the mid-20th century, Escher created a series of works that explored the impossibility of multiple gravity sources using planetoids and stars in a science fiction world. His work Gravitation developed from this exploration. In it, he conceived a complex star structure that serves as the shell for twelve different turtles, all with a different center of gravity. Represented in six colored pairs - red, orange, yellow, purple, green and blue - each turtle rests directly opposite its counterpart. Like nearly all of his works, Escher’s creation in Gravitation would be impossible in the real world, though through his mathematical approach he presents it in a visually credible way. Zadora imparts the same level of mathematical precision in his impressive 3-dimensional version of the work. At first glance, it appears to be a nonsensical jumble of turtle heads and limbs, though a closer inspection reveals the inherent symmetry and harmony of the ingenious creation. The Canadian-born sculptor Baron Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof is recognized as the world's leading gemstone artist, and his international clientele includes the world’s most discerning connoisseurs. His pieces, which range from intricate sculptures such as this to innovative bespoke jewelry, are regarded as the most prized decorative artworks in modern time.
