Freyja Dorren, Watering Hole, 2023, glazed earthenware- 50cm Height X 35cm Width Unique piece. Freyja Dorren, born and raised in Edinburgh and now based in London, is a recent graduate at the Royal College of Art Ceramics & Glass MA which follows a Degree in Textiles at Central Saint Martins. Freyja has always been influenced by the life of cities, exploring the marriage of old historical aspects of architecture with new and modern developments into our ever-growing cities. Her interest in architecture stems from taking walks through the city of London, discovering old classical buildings, brutalist creations and high-tech features all within a short distance walk from each other. This led her to create work that is a nod to the past and the present, with a graphic style and finish, combining the undiscerning elements of a city. Each piece she has created is influenced by interior detailing, deriving from places such as the V&A Museum and other historic landmarks within London. Freyja's textile print background enables her to transform the tactile surface to create a unique interwoven surface, giving a current relevance to the object, bringing a contemporary twist to each landmark detail, magnifying repetition, and significance of history when we design. Colonnade I is a unique handmade coloured stoneware ceramic sculptural vase in dusky pink and white by the British artist Jo Taylor. The central form has been thrown on the potter's wheel and also hand-built, then adorned with architectural inspired flourishes and swirls. For Taylor, the making process hugely influences the final outcome of each piece. The way the raw material behaves and how it responds to her is intrinsic to the shapes & marks made. Clay pieces are made & marked with tools as the potter's wheel rotates until a collection of loops & curls of varying sizes are amassed. More clay is manipulated by hand to create further pieces with suggestions of direction. When the clay has dried enough to be handled assembly begins, by adding & securing each piece whilst paying attention to the physical & aesthetic sense of balance. As the work evolves decisions are made regarding the composition from every angle until the work is complete. Taylor’s inspiration comes from highly decorative architectural features such as ornate plaster ceilings, wrought iron and carved stone. Living near the Georgian city of Bath (UK) provides a rich visual resource, although it can be said that she will seek out such details wherever she goes. 'Promenade V’ is a unique porcelain sculpture by the British artist, Jo Taylor. Dramatic in scale Promenade V is a sheer triumph over the material employed. Known for being one of the most difficult ceramic bodies to work with, scale is always a challenge with porcelain and with this artwork, Taylor excels. Knowing her clay is everything, created in sections allows architectural scale whilst adding grog (pre-fired grains of clay) gives stability and strength. Adorned with her trademark flourishes adds glamourous movement throughout the piece. Best known for his remarkably inventive lamps, trays and vessels designed in organic, free form shapes, Arpad Rosti was a highly versatile artist, equally at home in both the ceramics and enameling fields. While most of his work was done in either clay or metal, in the late 1940s he also ventured into furniture design when he produced a group of tables in treated wood, mosaic, copper, and glass. His one-of-a-kind furniture was exhibited in 1949 at the Chinese Gallery in New York and written up in the New York Times. As further evidence of his wide-ranging talents, in 1972 he was commissioned to produce a stained glass window for a residence in North Caldwell, New Jersey which New York Times critic Joan Cook described as “a miracle of color and light.” Born in Subotica, Yugoslavia in 1909, Rosti studied architecture at the School of Industrial Arts in Budapest. In 1940, he moved with his wife Ilona to the United States and settled in New York where he became a naturalized citizen in 1945. In 1947 his work was featured in an exhibition organized by the Craftsmen’s Equity and presented at the Barbizon-Plaza Galleries in New York. The organization, of which he was President, aimed to “put craft on a business basis without sacrificing the individuality inherent in handmade articles.” Throughout the 1950s Rosti’s work was regularly chosen for the prestigious National Ceramic Exhibitions at the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts (now known as the Everson Museum).
