'Hoogwoud', Sculpture by Simon Oud

About the Item

Simon Oud (b.1958, NL) creates sculptures which are mainly constructed from zinc, sometimes combined with brass elements. Oud is not a sculptor, as he does not cut into a mass. He does not start with a volume from which he takes parts away, but he creates his work out of several sheets of metal assembled by welding. Inspired by the North Holland polder landscape, Oud first translates his personal imagination into drawings and various models in paper and cardboard. As he becomes the right form, he starts transforming his ideas into metal sheets which he cuts, bends, rolls, files, solders, etches, sands and polishes. During the construction process, the Material gains independence as an object where contrast within one form and the guidance of light are the expressive elements. After high school, Oud worked as a nurse, mechanic, screen printer and seven years as a prop manager at the Dutch Opera. At the age of thirty, due to a chronic back injury, he needed something that was more realistic for his condition. He went to the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, where he first studied painting and eventually monumental design.
