Large Italian Banded Onyx Sculpture Egg on a Pedestal

Carved from a single block a rare banded onyx this large sculpted egg rests on an electrified pedestal that creates internal light for the egg making it a glowing geometric form. The light illuminates the material allowing the viewer to clearly see the quartz crystalline structure and creates contrast with the pyroclastic flow material that is trapped withing the stone at its time of formation that is denser and opaque . The Stone is the same material used by repute to complete Alexander the greats tomb. The large block has been carved out making it hollow and more accessible to transport or move about. The material has been worked to give the banding a pleasant asymmetrical placement creating tension and dramatic effect which is highlighted by the internal light. The pedestal is made of wood and has been painted to compliment the natural color within the stone specimen. Wired with a floor tap switch the light is easy to control with the tap of your foot and has been newly wired for modern American electrical requirements. The measurements given are for the egg and pedestal, the egg alone is 12 inches in diameter or slightly more at the bottom and is 15 inches tall while the pedestal is 9.50 inches square.
