Monumental Mid Century Tall Slab Glazed Stoneware Pottery Signed Inge Dated 1964

About the Item

A beautifully brutalist and organic slab made monumental vase signed Inge and dated 1964. The glazed and unglazed surface provides a fantastic understanding of the dichotomy between the surfaces that reflect and the surfaces that attract. This vase stands at an impressive twenty one inches in height, making it suitable for use as a floor vase or to be admired on a table, console or mantle. When I bought this vase, I had no understanding of slab built pottery, I simply knew that it was beautiful and appealed to me. Now I would like to share with you a little information on slab built pottery from the Spruce Crafts website, "Hand-building pottery using slabs of clay is an exciting way to create shapes that could never be produced using a potter's wheel or that would be difficult to achieve if you are doing hand construction using coils of clay. Slab building techniques were used extensively by Mesoamerican Pre-Columbian potters with some beautiful results." These hand built vessels using the slab building techniques allow the artist to create angles that would not be possible on a potters wheel. As you can see this vase has a long edge running the length of the sculpture. Signed and dated, Inge '64, the maker is unknown to me - however it is quite clear that this artist was wonderfully accomplished.
